Default New deal for Briggs laughing matter

New deal for Briggs laughing matter
Agent: 'That report is not accurate'

By Vaughn McClure
Tribune staff reporter

December 3, 2007, 11:11 PM CST

Agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Lance Briggs, chuckled Monday night when told of a report that the linebacker had agreed to a long-term deal with the Bears.

"I'll just say that's not true," Rosenhaus said while traveling to Dallas from Sean Taylor's funeral in Miami. "I can tell you that report is not accurate."

An Internet report cited unnamed sources saying Briggs, the Bears' franchise player, had agreed to such a deal. The Web site later recanted the story.

Briggs might end up signing an extension with the Bears, and he's definitely a top priority for the team. But any talk of Briggs actually signing such a deal is premature.

Under the terms of Briggs' one-year, $7.2 million tender as the franchise player, he is prohibited from signing a new deal until the season ends. Even if Briggs had agreed to an extension, it's doubtful such an agreement would be made public.

Briggs recently told the Tribune's Fred Mitchell that if the Bears wanted him, he would be willing to stay. He will become an unrestricted free agent after the season by participating in 75 percent of the defensive snaps. Barring an injury, he should reach that mark.

I think they should talk Urlacher into redoing his deal for less and lock up Lance.

The defense will be devistated without him.

A lot different than last spring?
Briggs will be UFA this year and the Bears will not pony up the $$$ he'll want.
