Default Job No. 1: Find franchise QB

Job No. 1: Find franchise QB
Smith would like Grossman back for another shot

January 1, 2008

The Bears embarked on their offseason adventure Monday without a starting quarterback for 2008.

Bringing stability to the position isn't so much a New Year's resolution as it is a quest spanning decades. The last time the Bears were in this position, after the 2002 season, they signed free agent Kordell Stewart, drafted Rex Grossman and wound up getting coach Dick Jauron fired.

Lovie Smith has been on board since, and he has swapped out starters 10 times in four seasons, using Grossman, Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel, Chad Hutchinson, Kyle Orton, Grossman again, Orton again, Grossman again, Brian Griese, Grossman again and Orton again. Dizzy yet?

''It's always tough when you play three quarterbacks,'' Smith said. ''No matter what the reason.''

This was the second season in Smith's four years that he has used three quarterbacks, and the sixth time in the last nine seasons for the team. No matter how you define the Bears' offseason needs -- and they are numerous -- the No. 1 issue remains quarterback.

''You look at the teams that consistently win, normally you're talking about one guy at the position,'' Smith said. ''We don't have to look very far; it's in our division, what the Packers have been able to do with one guy. It makes it a lot easier.

''I look forward to the day where we have one established guy that we can count on for years to come, and I think that's in our future.''

No no no no no no no no no no no no.

Job #1, Shore up the OL. Job #2, Shore up the RB position. If we go into next season with Peterson taking half as many snaps as he did this season, we might as well sell the franchise to the Gypsies. What a joke.

If a franchise QB is job #3, then the Bears are in some deep stuff.

I know this is wishful thinking, but maybe a good OL will spring Benson a little?(or maybe he just flat out sucks, i really don't know honestly)

BENSON SUCKS

That is no longer debatable.

O Line - Safety - RB - QB - all of these must be addressed this offseason.

The Bears have a lot of dead-weight to jettison.

That's not the answer either. TJ is NOT some great RB like people try to make him out to be.

I think Benson benefitted from the competition, and he needs to be in a platoon role...

Angelo was at the 1AA game supposedly scouting QB Joe Flacco from Deleware, but in the first they have to go with who ever they have rated the highest out of OT, S, QB or RB. But as IP said and I have been saying the OL has to begin to get fixed otherwise drafting or signing a free agent QB, which I think is a mistake, won't make a difference.

QB is ALWAYS the biggest need, if your team doesn't have a quality QB. The Bears definitely fit into that category. They should've traded up to grab Quinn last year (that's what I thought DURING the draft...was hoping the Bears would beat the Clowns to it). OL is very important too, but QB is always top priority.

That's the way I see it, but I wish Lovie would too.
