Report: Hearing to find if 49ers tampered with Briggs

A hearing is scheduled in New York City on Monday to help determine if the 49ers tampered with Bears linebacker Lance Briggs or his agent last season, according to a report on foxsports.com Saturday.

The Bears believe the 49ers contacted Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, regarding a contract before being granted permission to do so. The 49ers could lose draft picks or face a fine if found guilty.

According to the report, the Bears have a large contingent flying to New York, including team President Ted Phillips and general manager Jerry Angelo, a sign they are taking the charges quite seriously.

I believe the crux about the case is, the meddling prevented the Bears from getting a long-term deal done last year. Briggs and his sleazeball agent, made aware by the 9ers interest, took the one year tag deal, with the belief that the 9ers would show the money this year. If you look at statements Briggs has made to the media prior to the tag deal, a case can be made that he believed a big pay day, from another franchise, was on the horizon. It doesn't matter if a player is re-signed, or lost, if tampering can be proven, then a severe kick-in-the-sac is called for. Goddell himself is on record as saying he wants it (Tampering) stopped once and for all. The 9ers may end up being the whipping boy.
