Bears release Adam Archuleta

The Bears released safety Adam Archuleta on Tuesday.
Archuleta played one season with the Bears, starting 10 games at strong safety and missing one due to an arm injury in 2007. He lost his starting job after the 11th game to Brandon McGowan. Archuleta, who finished the season on special teams, recorded 64 tackles, two sacks and one interception.
Contacted by phone last week, Archuleta, who was coping with a death in the family, did not want to discuss the Bears' decision to draft safety Craig Steltz. Archuleta missed the beginning of voluntary workouts this off-season after the birth of his first child. He remained in Arizona with his family.
Archuleta, who was heading into his eigth season, was a first-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 2001 Draft. He played five seasons with the Rams, then signed a free-agent contract with the Redskins. Following an unsuccessful '06 season in Washington during which he was benched, Archuleta was traded to the Bears for a sixth-round draft pick.
