Default Palmer to play in Preseason?

Lewis knows when Palmer will play
http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs....606170386/1035

There's a date in August already circled on Marvin Lewis' calendar. That's when he's already planned for quarterback Carson Palmer to play in the preseason.

Lewis has had the date planned out for some time now, even before Palmer continued on Friday to show quicker progress than expected during the team's three-day minicamp. Palmer and his surgically repaired left knee were under center for a majority of the snaps during 11-on-11 team drills during both the morning and afternoon practices.

Prior to this camp, the belief was that Palmer would not participate in any team drills.

"There's no reason to back him off," said Lewis. "He's continued to be ahead of where we thought he would be when we got started. When we got started, we thought he'd be doing this in August. He's doing it in June. It's a credit to him and the people that have been working with him.

"Today he jumped in there when I didn't know he was in there. I just want to make sure when he's on the field against the defense, I know it. So I had to correct him. He's not been fatigued with it. He's carrying himself well."

Despite the unexpected progress made, Lewis won't deviate from his plan of when he'll get Palmer into a preseason game. Lewis also wouldn't divulge which game it would be.

The Bengals open training camp at Georgetown College on July 29 and will spend two weeks there before beginning their preseason schedule on Sunday, Aug. 13, at home against Washington. They travel to Buffalo to face the Bills five days later and will have 10 more days of practice before hosting Green Bay on Monday, Aug. 28. The Bengals close out the preseason schedule at Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 1.

The home games against Washington and Green Bay will be nationally televised by NBC and ESPN, respectively.

The Bengals open the regular at Kansas City against the Chiefs on Sept. 10. Lewis has maintained a belief all offseason that Palmer can be ready to play in the opener even though it would be only eight months from the date of Palmer's surgery. The events of the past two days have only strengthened that belief.

WOW, that's good news for bengals fans. Like the article said, that's a testament to Palmer and the hard work he has put into his recovery and rehab. Props to Palmer.

"You're not going to let him not play in the preseason and then roll out there in the first game against Kansas City," said Lewis. "That's always been the plan."
It would be extremely risky to let Palmer play so early. I think Palmer is an awesome player and a key figure in the Bengals offense. If he gets injured again, it will certainly kill any chances the Bengals have at division championship because he would probably be out for the rest of the season.

In my opinion, better to wait, make sure he is healthy and strong, and then unleash him.

No one has mentioned this but I suspect some old injuries to that leg were bothering him before his knee was ripped apart. He has made comments in a few articles that he is surprised at just how good his leg feels now. I think he's relieved like he has had pain in that leg for maybe some of his college years and now its gone. He hasn't said directly but more in a round about way and he also complained about his leg at times last season. I can see why he would be so ahead of schedule if that was the case.

Gotta agree with Mad Viking here, why risk gettin Palmer injured so soon. he knows the system, there's no competition for his slot. it's a big risk IMO.

I think its up to Palmer and everyone else involved in the decison, as well as his doctors who aren't team or NFL affiliated. I rely on them to make that decison and, ...to make the right one!

True but still he had a serious knee injury. and as someone who's had a few of those himself, why tempt trouble if you don't need too.

It can be done. Jerry Rice was Hurt on August 31st 1997 week one against the Buccs, torn ACL. He was back on the field by the end of the season.

I have too and I didn't come back anywhere near as fast as Carson but then again, I didn't have the support he has behind him.
