Lewis wasn’t pleased with the absence of Odell Thurman, the middle linebacker suspended for the first four games of the season because of a violation of the substance abuse policy but is eligible to practice during training camp. Lewis expected Thurman on Saturday, but said he was delayed by family problems and hinted that he’s viewing his status with year-long ramifications.

As for Thurman, Lewis said rather abruptly, "We'll have somebody probably play there for the season, so we're not going to worry about a guy that's not here, or a guy that's not a part of our football team."
"It's a non-factor," he said. "We expect him here. If you want to be in charge of him you're welcome. He's dealing with some things with his family and they'd ask he be allowed to do this. There's no pressing need for him to be here."
