A few years ago our Bengals beat writer, Kevin Goheen, came upon a 99-cent miniature bobblehead of Takeo Spikes, which he carries in his computer bag and props up in front of the press box window every Sunday, facing out. The adolescent scribes (a fits-all category) have been known to supply a running commentary from the little guy, with a large percentage of the words being "dog." As in, "Dog, you guys miss me out there, don't you?"
And yes, Dog, they do.
From time to time, Marvin Lewis has admitted as much, expressing regret that, in the weeks after he showed up on the job in 2003, he was unable to dissuade Spikes from filing for free agency, unable to convince his best linebacker that things would be different around here. Which they've been, by and large.
