The release of cornerback Keiwan Ratliff and signing of Blue Adams on Wednesday falls in line with the message Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis gave the team at the beginning of the week.
"I talked about guys understanding their role; (Adams) understands his role," Lewis said. "His major part of him being here is his snaps he's going to get on those fourth-down plays. I think that's important."
Ratliff was a second-round pick of the Bengals in 2004, but his playing time has steadily decreased the past two seasons with the arrival of first-round picks Johnathan Joseph last year and Leon Hall this year.
"It's always tough to let a player go, particularly a guy that's been here with us like that, and has done some good things for us," Lewis said.
