Cleveland Browns | OTA Notes: Winslow a spectator
excerpt:
The pass offense didn't exactly click Tuesday during the Browns' first organized team activities (OTA) session.
Quarterbacks missed open receivers. Passes went off receivers' hands. Wrong routes were run. Many of things you might expect on the first day of school.
But add it all up, and the pass offense probably didn't rate a passing grade.
Was it all disappointing to Romeo Crennel? Yes, absolutely. Why wouldn't it be? After all, he's the head coach and as such responsible for the quality of play throughout the team. The pass -- er, buck -- stops at his desk.
But the 38th-year coaching veteran was hardly surprised by it.
The entire unit is on a learning curve as new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski installs his scheme. And those things simply take time. The Browns have plenty of that, since the regular season doesn't start for another 3 ½ months.
"We were not as sharp as we need to be," Crennel said. "I told them this morning that we were going to throw a lot at them, and when you do that, sometimes it can look a little jagged. But along about the third or fourth day, you'll see some improvement."
There was more to it than that, though. The Browns were also plagued by the fact they were without two of their top pass catchers from a year ago, tight end Kellen Winslow and wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Both missed practice.
Winslow, who tied a team record for receptions last season with 89, is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. He came out onto the field and watched the last 50 minutes of practice after finishing his rehabilitation work.
Crennel said Winslow is "doubtful" for the full-squad minicamp, set for June 12-14.
"His target date is training camp," the coach said.
