Orpheus Roye to miss preseason after knee surgery

Big O has just become the Big Uh-O.
Browns left end Orpheus Roye, a 12-year pro, will undergo arthroscopic today on his right knee and be lost for the rest of the preseason.
It represents a huge blow to the team's biggest area of concern: the defensive line of its 3-4 defense. The three starters are so old they qualify for a senior discount in the Browns'
"Orpheus Roye had some clicking in his knees," said coach Romeo Crennel. "We'll have it cleaned out [this morning] and see if we can get him back ready for the regular season."
If all goes as planned, Roye will be ready to face his former team - and always his favorite opponent - the Steelers, in the opener Sept. 9.
But Crennel made no guarantees Roye will be ready for Pittsburgh - or make it through a 16-game season. Last season, Roye missed seven games, including the final five because of a left knee injury that landed him on injured reserve. The year before, he played all season with a torn meniscus in his right knee and had surgery after the season.
"There's no way to tell [if he can play all 16 games]," said Crennel. "Orpheus is the kind of guy that's a tough-minded individual and he'll do everything he can to get out on the football field. If his body will allow him, he'll be out there. Whether the body will do that, I'm not a doctor. I'm going to have to rely on them to tell me how much they clean out and what they anticipate for a recovery period."
Crennel assured fans it's not a season-threatening injury.
"We're not giving him a cane, a walking boot or immobilizing the leg," said Crennel. "There's some loose cartilage so they're going to clean it out. It's a normal procedure in football. That's my understanding of what's going to happen."
While Roye is out, four players will try out in his place: backup nose tackle Shaun Smith, the free-agent pickup from Cincin nati; J'Vonne Parker; Simon Fraser; and Orien Harris.
