Browns quarterback Charlie Frye knows exactly what it feels like to hear the fans chanting for a hot new rookie quarterback.

"That's where the mental toughness comes in a little bit," said Frye, who heard "Charlie! Charlie!" as a rookie in 2005. "A couple of years ago they were doing the same thing to me."

Frye stood on the sidelines Saturday night as first-round draft pick Brady Quinn came off the bench in the fourth quarter and directed two touchdown drives to pull the Browns within 23-20.

Neither Derek Anderson nor Charlie Frye helped clear the muddied starting quarterback waters Saturday night, but Brady Quinn shined in his debut performance.

Quinn entered in the fourth quarter with 9:20 remaining and immediately made his presence felt by completing his first five passes against the Detroit Lions amidst a Super Bowl-like flurry of camera flashes.

Unfazed by the raucous welcome, Quinn led the Browns to their second touchdown of the game on a seven-play, 63-yard drive that took 2:41. Quinn passed on every play and nearly capped off the touchdown with a two-point conversion throw.

CLEVELAND: Start Charlie Frye, give Brady Quinn extensive preseason time to be the backup and hand Derek Anderson a clipboard and a baseball cap.

That's what the Browns should do about their quarterback situation.

Let's make it simple, something the Browns refused to do in their preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday night:



No. 1: Frye.

No. 2: Quinn.

No. 3: Anderson.

Not that Frye did anything especially well to earn the job, but someone has to start. At least Frye has played in 20 NFL games. He's physically tough and deserves a chance with new offensive coordinator Rod Chudzinski.



MEMO TO CHUD: I don't understand large chunks of your offense, which is not a problem. It seems your players don't, either. That's a very, very big problem. They spent more time looking back over their shoulders than at the men whom they were supposed to block. That's a major problem.

Back to the quarterbacks . . .

Anderson had a mediocre week of practice. On his first play of the game, the offensive line collapsed, and he reacted slowly. The result was a fumble.

Oh, rookie left tackle Joe Thomas also was called for a holding penalty. So the offensive line was holding, but still couldn't stop the rush.
