Browns GM says it would be 'unrealistic' for rookie to be the top QB in Week 1 against Steelers
DENVER - The Browns' starting quarterback two weeks from today might be Charlie Frye and it might be Derek Anderson. It will not be Brady Quinn.
General Manager Phil Savage on Saturday night put an end to any speculation Quinn could move up the charts quickly enough to start against the Steelers.
"It's unrealistic for Brady to be in the mix for the opener," Savage said after the first quarter.
Coach Romeo Crennel has been saying the same thing, but Crennel caused the speculation last week when he said he wanted the Steelers to have to prepare for two quarterbacks. He identified Frye as one, but he said the other one was "Yes."
Quinn, the rookie from Notre Dame, did not play in the first half Saturday night.
Decision time
The first mandatory roster cuts are Tuesday, when all NFL rosters must be down to 75. Rosters are cut to 53 on Sept. 1.
Savage said the Browns will wait until final cuts to make a decision on Gary Baxter and LeCharles Bentley. He said Baxter will resume practice on Monday.
Both players are trying to come back from patellar tendon injuries. The Browns can keep Bentley on the physical unable to perform list and delay a decision on him until mid-October. They can activate him, pending a physical, or they can put him on injured reserve. They do not have the PUP option on Baxter because he was activated early in training camp.
