Browns general manager Phil Savage said today that the trade of Charlie Frye to Seattle for a sixth-round pick clarifies the quarterback situation.
"Derek (Anderson) is the starter, Brady (Quinn) is the No. 2 and Ken (Dorsey) will help them both in the classroom,'' said Savage at an afternoon press briefing.
The Browns confirmed that they have traded Frye to Seattle and re-signed Dorsey. The deal is contingent on Frye passing a physical in Seattle.
The Seahawks chose to trade for Frye to be their No. 3 quarterback rather than sign Dorsey, who worked out for them last week. Dorsey will take Frye's place on the Browns roster. Anderson is expected to start Sunday against Cincinnati.
Savage said he's been fielding talk about both QBs since drafting Quinn and that more teams were interested in Frye.
"A year ago, I was saying, hey, let's try to build the thing around Charlie," Savage said. "We attempted to do that. He came into a very tough situation ... we've had a number of coordinators.
"But at same time, Sunday we needed to see more production. Probably the most revealing thing was that Charlie had 10 attempts (passing) and five sacks and Derek had 28 attempts and one sack.
"Derek has a big arm. There's a comfort level in that you can call every play in the playbook and he can get it there. And the fact he does get rid of the ball. That's what made him intriguing based on those games last year."
