Default Maryland, Rutgers in serious talks about move to Big Ten Conference

Maryland and Rutgers are in advanced discussions with the Big Ten about joining the conference, multiple sources have told Yahoo! Sports.

Nothing is official yet, but tentative plans for announcements from the two schools that they are leaving their current leagues could come early next week, sources said. Maryland is a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Rutgers has been a member of the Big East since 1991.

Their movement would increase Big Ten membership to 14, and would come not long after most college sports observers believed the conference realignment carousel had stopped spinning. Notre Dame’s announcement in September that it would join the ACC while remaining independent in football was thought to be the end of a two-year spasm of realignment that significantly altered the college landscape. Big Ten leadership last spring said it was comfortable with its current 12-school alignment.

This could be a trigger for further conference realignment.

I was going to post this, but you beat me too it. Don't see why BIG 10 would want either one, at least Maryland has basketball maybe. But Maryland would be crazy to leave the best basketball conference historically for a football conference. Rutgers is medicore to bad at everything usually. Really BIG 10 is this the best you could do?

When they missed on ND, these schools probably are not bad replacements. They won't overly threaten the traditional powers and offer new tv markets and more stability. Who do you think they should have went after instead?

There's a 50 million exit fee, I doubt Maryland's going anywhere.

Look the ACC Conferance is screwed up. They were good with 8-10 teams They didnt need 14 or even 16 teams Thats like the NFL with 60 teams. I wanted maryland to leave right after Miami,Florida St,Boston College and Va Tech got in. I wanted Maryland to get in the Big East Conferance. Like in Basketball play against Georgetown. That would be some riverly to see. The ACC Should have never allowed Boston College,FSU or Miami in there. I would welcome 2 teams VA Tech and Navy THATS IT! So there you got 1 team in Georgia. 1 in South Carrolina,4 in North Carrolina 2 in Virgina and 2 In Maryland.

IT MADE IT WORSE! Cause Clemsons dynasty was comming to an end it was supposed to be Marylands turn but FSU put a stop to that. And all those BBALL teams helped DUKE to a power house. Now Terps cant win nether sport If they would gone to Big East they could win in football as well in Basketball.

Maryland is a good fit for the B1G. Plus it increases the conference's footprint. Rutgers pulls in a huge media market, even if CFB isnt huge in NYC, it still gets millions of new subscribers. I like the move. Big East is a sinking ship. ACC seems to be on solid ground for the future, but B1G is still a premier conference to be in (not referring to on field play).
