Boston College Spaziani the latest coaching gallows victim

Quote:
As expected, the coaching carnage continues on what’s traditionally a biblical day of rest, with a second ACC school becoming the latest to send its head coach up the hill to the football equivalent of Golgotha.

Boston College announced Sunday that Frank Spaziani “will not return as football coach of the Eagles.” The decision is both effective immediately and expected coming off a 2-10 season, .

“A personnel decision of this magnitude affects many people and is never taken lightly, but I felt a change was necessary,” BC athletic director Brad Bates said in a statement.

Bates’ move officially ends Spaziani’s 16-year run at the school.

Following stints at Navy, Virginia and in the CFL, Spaziani was hired as BC’s running backs coach in 1997. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1999, where he spent the next 10 seasons before being named BC’s head coach in January of 2009. Spaziani was elevated to that position a week after then-head coach Jeff Jagodzinski was fired for interviewing for the same position with the New York Jets.

In his four years at BC, Spaziani was 22-29 overall — 1-0 as interim head coach in 2006 — and 13-19 in ACC play. After winning eight games in his first season, the Eagles had regressed each season, posting seven, four and two wins the past three years.

“Obviously this is a sad day for my family and me,” Spaziani said in a statement released through the school. “Boston College has been my home for more than 16 years, and I have been fortunate to work with some amazing student-athletes. I will always treasure my relationships with them and the BC staff. Boston College is a tremendous place, and I am extremely thankful for my time there. I wish the current and future Eagles nothing but the best.”

Spaziani becomes the 11th FBS coach to “part ways” with his program in the past two months. Based on the last spinning of the coaching carousel — there were 27 coaching changes in 2011-12 — he won’t be the last.
