This is exactly why they need to do away with preseason polls and not start the rankings until around the 5th week or so. I think it shows a little favortism towards the SEC as well

This is pretty simple, Bama is the SEC conference champion FL and Oregon are not. And because of the success of the SEC overall in OOC matchups particularly in the title game, SEC 1 loss teams are generally favored over 1 loss teams from other conferences. But the SEC had to earn that favor by winning six straight OOC titles.

How would you guys rank this 2012 Alabama team vs past National Champions (not just Bama). Looking at all BCS Champions from top to bottom, this Bama team would likely fall in the middle. They are not as good as 01 Mia, 09 Bama, 08 Fla, 04 USC, or 05 TX but they are certainly above 02 OSU, 00 OKL, and 98 TN. I would say above 03 LSU but below 06 Fla.

I'll wait until next month when they actually win it before I rank them with anyone. This isn't the most impressive team I've ever seen, but Nick Saban is still getting it done.

I understand Bama being the conference champion. And everything worked out since OSU was ineligible and ND was undefeated. But what would have happened if ND had lost a game (and OSU wasn't eligible)? Does Georgia play Bama for a third time or does UF get a shot. What about Oregon or K-State, both with one losses. What about ND if they only had one loss. While the BCS lucked out on the outcome, it could have become a major nightmere. And I think preseason polls played a lot into it
I also don't necessarly agree that the past should have a baring on the present. Look at Auburn and Arkansas from the past to this year. Aubrun goes from winning it all to being dead last in the West. Should them winning the NC have any baring on anything seeing where they are this year? That is almost like saying UM gets special treatment b/c they are the all time winningest team. That means absolutely nothing today

The real chaos would be if OSU wasn't ineligible because then the two teams making the NCG might not even be true top five teams. A lot of missed opportunities. If Oregon has a competent kicking game, or if there were competent refs in the ND/Stan game. KSt and Klien are not that good so luckily the team with the worst D in the country was able to thrash them. If ND has a loss then it is Florida vs Alabama, and they appear to be the two best teams this year. I'm not sure what is meant by "third time" with Georgia. The system worked again this year but it did dodge a few bullets. The Four teamer will be fantastic.

I agree with your assessment. The strength of this Bama team is clearly the o line, normally its the linebackers and secondary.

Last year's D was stellar and this years O (notably run game) can grind it out against anyone. Obviously Richardson and Lacy were a great duo last year but this O Line is stronger.

That was supposed to be a "second" time similar to the rematch we had last year with Bama and LSU

The system did not work, once again. The BCS got lucky that ND went undefeated and the SEC champion only had one loss. UCLA could easily have thrown a wrench into everything in the last week of the season. As you said, there were some bullets dodged. Just because it happened to get the NCG correct doesn't mean the system worked. The BCS is also responsible for other games, and there's more than a few things screwed up again this year. At least it's not screwed up at the top I guess.
