Texas Tech You Make the Call

A Texas Tech Back/Receiver caught a swing pass, in the fourth Q, and took it all the way to the house. Except he made a mistake that nobody on the field caught, but they did catch it in the booth. He Tossed it away into the end zone before he had control of the ball into the end zone. At around the 1/2 yard line he just tossed it into the end zone.

While this was happening, Texas Tech got an excessive celebration penalty from their sideline and the ball just laid in the middle of the end zone for a few seconds. The ref finally picked it up, unaware of the implications of him picking up a live ball.

So the booth overturned the TD and gave Tech possession of the ball inside the 1 yard line plus the 15 yard celebration penalty, so they got it at the 16. The TV commentators had some opinions on this. They thought it should have been a Touchback and TCU's ball at the 20 plus the penalty yardage.

The one who really screwed up was the ref for picking up a live ball and call the TD. If that had not happened, both teams could have fought for possession. But essentially what I believe happenend was a fumble, which went forward, and the ref mistakenly interfered. Since you can't fumble forward and possession didn't change, the team (Tech) and player who fumbled retain possesion at the spot of the fumble. They got it right. Right? Am I Right, they nailed it.

That was a CRAZY game - I watched the whole thing. They had several weird calls in that game. One was a touchdown they called back that you couldn't figure out why -- then there was the fumble (replays showed it was a fumble for sure) that the refs didn't call. The one you mentioned was probably the weirdest. I always thought when that happened (I've seen it in a couple of games before) that it was a touch back and the other team got the ball on the 20 yd line. In any event, I thought Tex Tech played better and deserved the win, but it was a fun game to watch.

That game will be tough to top this week. The TD they took back for no seeming reason was because Brandon Carter half-*** did a fair catch signal then took off with the ball. They called "invaled" Fair Catch signal. That was the right call, if I was a defender and I saw him wave his hand, I stop defending, but I guess he was just using his arms to get his balance - crazy.
