Gators Want Quick Answer

University of Florida officials have contacted Steve Spurrier to gauge his interest in returning to coach the school's football team, a source told ESPN college football analyst Jim Donnan on Tuesday.

School officials want to know within the next 24 hours whether Spurrier is interested in returning to Gainesville to replace the fired Ron Zook, the source said.

Zook, who will finish out the season, was fired Monday after two-plus years, satisfying a growing groundswell for his ouster that began the day he replaced Spurrier. The Gators are 20-13 under Zook with four games left -- that's just 14 losses fewer than Spurrier had in 12 seasons.

If Spurrier would return, the former Washington Redskins coach would be interested in having Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Bo Pellini on his staff, the source told Donnan.

"We will discuss this job with a number of coaches, and obviously if Coach Spurrier is interested, we will sit down with him," AD Jeremy Foley said on Monday.

It might happen!!

Stopps
Do you mean Stoops? If so, he is never going to leave OU and if he did, he would be coaching in Florida years ago but he decided to stay with OU and got like a 7 year deal or something, he's staying in OU for a LONG time!

he may not come back...but maybe you should go back and review some of stoop's statements regarding Florida and the head coaching postion.

not saying it will happen now, or later
but the itch is there

...is this the worst decision in college athletic history?

Granted, Zook probably should have gotten the boot but you just told the team that the rest of the year is meaningless...

made your coach an uneffective lame duck...

and sent the message that you are Steve Spurrier's booty call..."It's okay Steve, go try the NFL. But if you ever want to come back just let us know."

Yeah the days of crushing UT will be back soon enough!!!

I love the mention about Bo Pellini onto our staff. If anyone who is really knowledgable about him can give some info on him, it would be appreciated. I know Nebraska hired him cause he was supposed to be a great coach. I think he is coaching OU's secondary now and if hired, can help our pourous secondary. I know he is learning quite abit of Stoops system to come here and apply some of that agressive, attacking defense that we desperately need.

For what its worth, Woody Paige said on Around the Horn that his source "very, very close to Spurrier" said a meeting is being set up this week. Then on PTI they mention Dan LeBatard's column about the Dolphins wanting Spurrier (kinda funny to me since he could have written this same article a week ago but waited til the day after Zook gets canned, so it probably means its fluff).

Ive always figured that after Foley whiffed on Stoops, Gruden and Shannahan that he hired Zook as a stopgap to the possible return of Spurrier (NOT SAYING that was his plan, but it had to enter his thinking). Either that or he wanted his own whipping boy to massage his ego and who better than your best friend.

As for all the griping about the time of this , even Foley knows a change is needed now. The Gators own Georgia and another win would mean the heat is taken off Zook. Plus, it isnt a coincidence that with another season down the tubes (and that for our program means no big cash payout in the SEC title game or BCS game) and our record at 4-3 that a move was made. The season is lost for the most part, so make the move now and make sure you have first crack at Steve Spurrier at the very least. When Steve abruptly left three years ago, Foley scrambled around for every big name and whiffed. He was left to pick Zook off the scrap heap. He didnot want that to happen again.
