Default Jones says Phillips will return to coach Dallas

NFL: Jones says Phillips will return to coach Dallas

San Antonio Express-News

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Thursday squashed rumors that Wade Phillips' future with the team could depend on the outcome of Sunday's playoff game against the New York Giants.
"There's nothing that can happen in the playoffs that would change my thinking about him being head coach of the Dallas Cowboys," Jones said in Irving.

Speculation about Phillips' job security began after offensive coordinator Jason Garrett interviewed last weekend for head-coaching vacancies in Atlanta and Baltimore. Many league observers believe Garrett is the Cowboys' head coach in waiting, and that Jones would fire Phillips and promote Garrett to keep him from leaving.

Jones said it's no secret he thinks highly of Garrett, but he said the possibility of Garrett leaving was "a great problem to have" because it means Phillips has been a success.

"There really should be no question here," Jones said. "It's been just 10 months since Wade became head coach, and look at what has happened in 10 months."

Phillips led the Cowboys to a franchise record-tying 13-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

"I don't know how you could even have a question as to whether or not he's coaching for the Cowboys in the future," Jones said.

Jones also scoffed at the notion Garrett and assistant head coach Tony Sparano aren't fully committed to helping the team make a Super Bowl run after they interviewed for head-coaching jobs.

Sparano, who coaches the offensive line, is considered the front-runner to become coach of Miami. He also interviewed with Atlanta and Baltimore.

I think it will be better next year. We didnt have a real NT Spencer had a good year in spite of his sack total, and Newman/Henry were seldolm healthy together.

Getting Ferg back will pay huge dividends in and of itself, and I think the staff will find way's to get Spencer on the field, which is something they struggled with once Ellis came back

Henry is not a starter on this team, he can be the Nickel back but I dont want him as the #2 DB, hes a shell of what he used to be

moves I want to see made this offseason

1. Lock Barber up long term
2. Resign Flozell as long as he wants a reseasonable deal
3. Tender on Canty
4. Grab Hamlin back
5. Resign Keith Davis, a key part of our ST
6. Tear up Crayton contract

after all of that, I want to grab Marcus Trufant off the market... he'd be the perfect DB to play alongside Newman, I STILL want Roy Williams to bulk to an LB, hes not a safety in this league, period.... hes an awful coverage man

Draft Time.... grab a WR depending on whos the board, if not look for a sleeper later rounds (James Hardy is my sleeper)...... 2. grab a safety (Kenny Phillips from The U MIGHT slip down to the 20s, If he does I make the jump no hesitation)

Linebacker is clogged and will be even more clogged if Roy makes the switch (there were talks of the move to LB last year and even at draft time, but I think its now or never... its to the point where Roy is not even on the field on 3rd down plays, thats ridiculous that one of the highest paid players in the league is off the field on key plays)...... maybe try to make some moves cutting down the depth there

before I would have said Trufant isnt an option considering the tag. But I think after another season of not winning a PO game, Jerry may be looking for "Charles Haley" I think Trufant of Roy Williams/Fitzgerald/Boldin could be that missing peice

I feel you on Williams now. Ive stuck up for him, but he just isnt the dynamic catylyst he was before, that James now. The only problem is that we might be married to him, with his contract. On the field, we could move Hamlin over, and while we lose alot in run support, we do have a top run defence, so we could afford it. And let Watkins and Brown battle it out a FS.

IMO Henry's problem is health, and the fact that he just can not play well hurt. If he is %75, he is really %50. If he is healthy, he is a very good CB, look at his season before he went down. Thats why I think the Nickle is the best for him. Limit his downs

Persoanlly, I still hope the Bills throw McGee on the block. he is my pet guy. Excellent CB, elite returner, great contract (signed when he was a NB/KR) IMO it doesnt make since for a Tampa 2 team to not shop him

Considering Bobby Carpenter is our 7th LB, I think your right. IMO its out of Ayodele, Burnett and Carpenter. I think you can almost eliminate Carpenter, he has a hard time learning new schemes and would be worthless anywhere but here next season. Given a role, I think he could be a playmaker here. Im not ready to throw him on the bust pile yet, he was hurt this year. If he does nothing next year.....bust

I think Burnett would be the most
attractive and logical trade assett out of the two. He isnt a natural 3-4 LBer, but trading him, you are trading a ace cover LB. IDK if thats something you want to do. I can see Ayodele in a place like NE. They are gonna need LB's, and they dont like to go youth

I honestly think he is a sleeper in the second. Its a weak year for WR's, and he could wind up bieng the best
