Default Pacman must play well to cash in with Cowboys

Quote:
IRVING - If Pacman Jones is to be paid like one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, he will have to earn it.

The four-year contract Jones signed with the Cowboys is worth $13.3 million, although he has a chance to earn more should he hit an escalator that would raise his 2011 base salary to the franchise tag for a cornerback.
Dallas Cowboys / NFL

Jones' base salaries total $4.7 million in the first three years of the deal, but there's a huge bump in 2011. Provided he is reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Jones will earn a $700,000 base salary this year, but he will not receive any signing bonus. The base salaries in 2009-11 are $1 million, $3 million and $7.25 million.

He has March roster bonuses worth $250,000 and $255,000 due in 2009 and ’10 and a $345,000 reporting bonus in 2010. He also has $250,000 workout bonuses in 2009 and 2010.

In order to really cash in, however, Jones has to play at a high level. If he is named to two Pro Bowls or intercepts seven passes in any two of the first three seasons and participates in 65 percent of the snaps, his base salary would jump up to the 2011 franchise tender.

The NFL calculates the franchise tags as the average cap figures of the top-five paid cornerbacks in the league. Under his old contract, Jones was scheduled to earn base salaries of $1.29 million, $1.74 million and $2.19 million from 2008-10.

The Cowboys sent a fourth-round pick to Tennessee this year and will send a sixth-round pick in 2009 should Jones make it through the season without any incidents. If he is never reinstated, the Cowboys would recoup a fourth-round selection from the Titans next year. They would get a fifth rounder if he gets in trouble after reinstatement.
That's a smart move...

I love it. It's a good situation for us. All the reward with little risk. Its like a mob type agreement, dude is already in too deep to have any leverage with the Boss(Jerry).

Exactly, and if he never gets reinstated we get our pick back.

Either way win win.

This is a smart move, and like Roy said a Win Win situation. Let's hope Pacman behaves...
