As if he wanted to prove his special lady right, Tony Romo went out yesterday and stunk it up on the front nine in a U.S. Open qualifier. Romo, a 1-handicapper, needed to shoot a 71 or better to move on to sectional qualifying, but could only muster a 75.
He was followed by five video cameras and a gallery of 25 that did not include Jessica Simpson. I'm guessing that the biggest gallery anyone else had at the local qualifier was about two.
The list of quality golfers in NFL history is extremely quarterback- and kicker-heavy. You don't see a lot of Joey Porters, Tony Siragusas, or Gilbert Browns out there.
Al Del Greco, former kicker for the Oilers/Titans can often be found at the top of the leaderboard of those lame celebrity golf events. John Elway has some game on the links. Mark Rypien's a player, and Steve Bartkowski, Sterling Sharpe, and Ryan Longwell also come to mind. I'm sure I'm forgetting some quality golfers.
And of course, Ryan Leaf is the golf coach at West Texas A&M, though I don't know if he's a decent golfer himself. I think the position of golf coach is kind of like Driver's Ed teacher. You don't have to be good at it to be the teacher ... you just have to show up.
This is the kind of post that happens in the offseason when Matt Walsh proves to be a huge letdown.
