DETROIT -- For one night in August, the "R" beside Jay Cutler's name on the rosters passed out in every crevice of Ford Field did not seem appropriate.
It was just his first game, but it was also one that looked more like the kinds of performances he displayed in singeing Southeastern Conference secondaries with strikes from his laser-quick, Swiss-watch accurate arm.
Rookie? On this night, hardly. There will surely be summits to scale and valleys to traverse, but on Friday night, Cutler's professional career began with an effort that would have left even the most discerning veteran pleased with his work.
Sixteen completions in 22 attempts? A passer rating over 114? Those were the kinds of numbers that made Cutler's spotlight-seizing debut in a 20-13 Broncos loss to the Detroit Lions seem the kind of curtain-lifter that was worthy of Broadway's lights and attention, not the glorified dress rehearsals in New Haven.
"You don't want to get too excited," cautioned Head Coach Mike Shanahan, "but a guy's got to go out there and he's got to perform, and I thought he showed a lot of poise and did an excellent job."
