Bailey, Wilson miss curfew, benched
Champ Bailey couldn't believe it.
He and Al Wilson, two of the Broncos' leaders and high character players, made a mistake. An apologetic Bailey was still shaking his head about it as he was leaving Invesco Field at Mile High on Saturday night after the Bailey and Wilson-less Broncos beat Tennessee 35-10.
Both defensive stalwarts were suspended for the game by coach Mike Shanahan for missing curfew at the team's hotel Friday night. Both Pro Bowl players watched the game from the locker room. Shanahan said the extent of the punishment is complete.
"I'm disappointed in myself, that's the thing that gets me," Bailey said. "You look at me and Al, and this is out of character for us. We don't miss games. We are two accountable guys. I apologize to everyone and it won't happen again."
Wilson declined to comment.
"We have rules," Shanahan said.
Bailey said the transgressions were not serious but said he agreed with Shanahan's decision to keep the players out.
"We have rules and they were broken," Bailey said. "I feel bad for my teammates. Those are the guys that I am with. Those are the guys I go to battle with, and I let them down. Those are the guys that I'm accountable to. It won't happen again.... Thank God it was the preseason."
The suspension will serve a shocking reminder to the rest of the team, safety John Lynch said. "It shows none of us are immune," Lynch said. "Guys will take notice.
