Default Denver Broncos news 10/25

Broncos ready to run with fast Indy

If they weren't so focused on trying to cover them and beat them, cornerbacks Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth might want to thank them.

The Indianapolis Colts are a primary reason Williams and Foxworth wound up playing for the Broncos.

Perhaps between backpedaling sprints while guarding Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne at Invesco Field at Mile High on Sunday, Williams and Foxworth can give the Colts' receivers a pat on the back for a job well done.

"Of course, we know about how we did get picked apart the previous years and that's probably why the Broncos brought us in," Williams said. "We accept it as a challenge. We want to perform and show them they brought us in for the right reason."

Default Bowlen salutes NFL plan to play outside U.S.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen calls the NFL's approval of playing regular-season games outside of the United States each year an opportunity to make the league a global powerhouse.

"It's an opportunity to reach out internationally to fans," Bowlen said Tuesday night from New Orleans. "That's what this is all about and I think we're going to see it become very popular."

The NFL, which played a game in Mexico City last season, will play two games each regular season, beginning in 2007, outside the U.S. The plan was approved by NFL owners Tuesday.

Bowlen said games likely will be played in Mexico, Canada, Germany and England. He said East Coast teams could play in Europe and Western teams could be chosen for games in Mexico and Canada. Bowlen said his preference would be to play in Mexico or Canada.

Default Dungy keeps his love for the game

The thrill of notes, the agony of defeat ...

He's 30, in the prime of a Hall of Fame career, but the question remains: Will Peyton Manning ever win a Super Bowl?

"I think he will," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "I think he'll play a long time. He'll probably win a Super Bowl long after I'm gone."

Which brings us to the next question hovering over the Colts, who will be at Invesco Field at Mile High on Sunday: Given his personal situation, including the tragic death of his son last year, how much longer does Dungy want to coach?

"I'm probably always year to year," he said. "I still enjoy it. I can do my job and still have a semblance of family life. It's fun right now." ...

Default A rush to judgment

Fabled architect Frank Lloyd Wright once offered that "doctors can always bury their mistakes."

Well, fabled defensive coordinators know that, in the NFL, your mistakes bury you.

And this week, the Broncos face the guy who has tossed more dirt on defenses in the past eight-plus seasons than anybody in the league.

The Colts' Peyton Manning is the only player in league history to have thrown for at least 3,000 yards in each of his first eight years in the league, and he's well on his way to a ninth as Indianapolis (6-0) prepares to visit Denver on Sunday (2:15 p.m., CBS 4).

Default Just who is this quarterback of the future?

George Shaw. Mike Taliaferro. Steve DeBerg. David Woodley.

Jake Plummer.

This is how it is imagined. One day, a couple of generations from now, Plummer will be a trivia question, just as are those other four names. He will be the man before the man, as Shaw was before John Unitas. Shaw broke his leg, not wishing any such thing to happen to Plummer.

Joe Namath replaced Taliaferro in the second game of Namath's rookie season and played ever after, but then Namath was more than just a quarterback. He was the face of a fresh league, highly paid to be exactly what he turned out to be.
