Default T.D.'s number remains active

So there's no misunderstanding, Terrell Davis will be the 21st Bronco inducted into the Ring of Fame at halftime of the Denver-Jacksonville game Sunday, but he will not join Frank Tripucka (18), Floyd Little (44) and John Elway (7) as the fourth Bronco to have his number retired.

Davis' No. 30 is worn by Broncos fullback Mike Bell, who during his childhood days in Denver and Phoenix idolized T.D. Bell wore No. 20 as a rookie last year, but gave it to new running back Travis Henry this year. When searching for a new number, Bell asked Davis through an intermediary if he could wear 30.

"T.D. told that person it was cool," Bell said. "I wear it with pride."

Simeon sightings
Defensive end Simeon Rice has yet to get his first sack in limited playing time through the Broncos' first two games. Is Rice frustrated?

"A little bit," he said. "I understand what I can do. But I'm being patient. As patient as I can. Maybe not as patient as people would like me, but as patient as I can. They're doing the intelligent thing, making sure I'm ready and familiar with the situation. I'm making some plays."

Footnotes
Outside linebacker Ian Gold didn't practice Thursday because of a sore ankle, but the team hopes he can play Sunday. ... It doesn't look good for backup safety Hamza Abdullah to play Sunday. He missed his second consecutive practice Thursday because of a hip injury. If Abdullah can't go, Curome Cox would be up for more playing time. ... Tight end Stephen Alexander (calf) and cornerback Domonique Foxworth (ankle) remained limited in practice Thursday. ...

Punt and kickoff returner Domenik Hixon stayed after practice Thursday to get extra work and instruction from special- teams coach Scott O'Brien. ...

Not to suggest the Broncos' offense struggled last year, but Sauerbrun needs four more punts to pass Paul Ernster for 11th on the Broncos' all-time list. Ernster punted 80 times for the Broncos last year. Sauerbrun made every punt in 2005 and the first two games of 2007 and still has only 77 attempts. ...

Local Verizon Wireless stores will host autograph signings by Broncos players D.J. Williams (Aspen Grove, Littleton) and Brian Clark (Westminster) from noon-1 p.m. The event is to encourage local fans to bring their outdated Yellow Pages to the stores for recycling, then pick up a new book for autographs. Broncos cheerleaders will be autographing at the stores from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
