NFL forces Broncos to re-sign rookie

Rookie safety Josh Barrett will have to re-sign with the Broncos after the NFL challenged a phrase in the contract he signed last week, a Broncos official said today.

Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said league officials found a "technicality with the language" of the contract, a four-year deal with a signing bonus of $56,000. Barrett, the Broncos' seventh-round pick from Arizona State, was the first of the team's nine draft picks to sign.

Broncos assistant general manager Brian Xanders is working with Barrett's agent to reword the contract, and Barrett is expected to re-sign when he returns to Dove Valley for conditioning next week, Smyth said.
