Agent: Lions and QB Kitna reach tentative agreement

March 14, 2006

DETROIT (AP) -- The Lions and Jon Kitna have reached a tentative agreement that will bring the free-agent quarterback to Detroit, his agent said Tuesday.

Kitna visited the Lions at their practice facility in suburban Detroit on Saturday and was "very impressed" with the organization, agent Mike Moye said. Kitna met with head coach Rod Marinelli, offensive coordinator Mike Martz and team president Matt Millen.

Kitna, 33, is a nine-year veteran who spent the past five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He started his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Detroit has been looking for a veteran backup for Joey Harrington. Earlier in the offseason, the Lions signed Shaun King to a one-year contract.

This is interesting, and a nice move by Detroit IMO. They needed a Vet if they were going to go with Joey and kitna IMO anyway is a good QB.

I heard that they wanted him to back up harrington, I can't see kitna wanting to be a backup to that guy. I see him starting, if not by week one, then by week 3.

I actually think Joey will be fine with some coaching, I think all of Detroit will be a lot better now that they actually have some coaches. I like the move just in case he falls I think Kitna would fit in real well.

Wow, I thought he'd go to the Jets. At least at Detroit, he can compete for the starting role, which is what he wants. I agree that he'll be starting for them next season.

I don't think they go with Kitna that early, if anything they are doing sort of what they did last year with Garcia. And that's bringing in a "just in case" guy. Just in case Joey doesn't pick this up they go with Kitna.

well that just in case guy had the job last year until he broke his leg. just like the just in case guy will be starting this year too. Remember what I said earlier about kitna doing well with good receivers in cincy and he has a nice group of guys in detroit.

Garcia was a Mooch guy and IMO the planet could see that coming. Martz actually want to use Harrington and didn't want a guy to come in and start, I believe they will let him go for a bit and see what he can do with actual coaches and a system.
