SportingNews.com - NFL - Lions Team Report
excerpt:
RB Kevin Jones (Lisfranc surgery) is expected to remain on the physically unable to perform list and miss the first six games of the regular season. Jones is ahead of schedule and is expected to make a full recovery but team officials want to be cautious with his return. Tatum Bell, who has impressed the coaching staff with his versatility, will be the starter. ...
Rookie first-round pick Calvin Johnson is still working with the second team and will continue to do so until he gets into better shape. Johnson was an eight-day holdout and is still catching up. Expect Johnson to be starting by the third preseason game. ...
There are going to be a lot of tough decisions on the offensive line. The starters are set, but the Lions have seven quality backups who will be fighting for three or four spots. It'll come down to positional flexibility and long-term potential.
NEWCOMER REPORT: Travis Fisher, signed as a free agent from the Rams, will be Detroit's nickel back, which is more than just the No. 3 cornerback position in this defense. The Tampa 2 nickel has to be more like a strong safety because he has to be strong in run support and know what gaps he has to fill in the differing assignments. Fisher has the physical presence to do that and can also cover tight ends and backs in one-on-one coverage, but his biggest challenge will be in staying healthy. Fisher has his previous two seasons end early because of injuries.
SCOUTING REPORT: RDE Kalimba Edwards, who couldn't win a starting job in his first five training camps, has been handed the job this season. Edwards is well aware of the fact that if he doesn't produce this year, it will likely be his last in Detroit.
