Though the Lions have yet to play a game with the 10th-year veteran, the benefit of having Kitna in the huddle is already apparent. He has a sound, firm and effective way of leading his teammates that exudes such confidence, it would be tough not to follow his lead.
While it may seem premature to declare chemistry between Kitna and his offense, his veteran presence speaks for itself. He is obviously comfortable holding a leadership role and has 10 years of experience to back up the guidance he gives on the field.
“Every time that people have said that I can’t do things, I’ve been able to do them,” said Kitna. “I think the one thing that people have said is: ‘he’s a career backup.’ I’m not. I was a starter in this league but [Cincinnati] just happened to draft a guy No. 1 overall (QB Carson Palmer) and they had to play him. Obviously that was the right choice for their organization but I was playing at a pretty high level when that decision was made.
“For me, (this is) just an opportunity for me to go out and now finish what I started with my career.”
My take:
I can't help but point out how much Kitna mentions himself in this article and how little he mentions his team, not a good sign. While it is hard to be worse than Harrington, Kitna is not exactly the long-term answer either. There is a reason Cincy had the top overall pick, and there is also a reason they used it on a QB.
