Charles Rogers is convinced he's still the same player who made a spectacular catch in the back of the end zone against Notre Dame in 2002 and scored on his first two NFL catches the next year.
The Detroit Lions receiver, taken No. 2 overall in 2003, chooses to overlook the 33 games he has missed as well as his lack of production or dependability.
Some wonder if Rogers will be cut Saturday, two days after the preseason finale at home against the Buffalo Bills. The former Michigan State star matter-of-factly said he will be with the Lions next week.
"It's just confidence," Rogers said after practice Wednesday. "You have to believe and stay positive. I think I will be here."
First-year coach Rod Marinelli might not want Rogers or receiver Mike Williams on his final roster, but team president Matt Millen could overrule the release of either player because he drafted both in the first round and it would hurt the team's salary-cap situation.
"There's draft status and then there's production," Marinelli said. "As a coach there are certain things you're tied to and then some you're not.
"The best players are going to win a job. 'Put it on tape.' I've been saying that forever. Sometimes you can't always do that, but 95 percent you're hoping to do that."
