Roar Report has learned the team's later round picks, fifth-round tackle Jonathan Scott (pictured left), sixth-round defensive back Dee McCann and seventh-rounder Anthony Cannon, will all report to training camp on time.

ALLEN PARK -- One day after inking seventh-round pick Fred Matua, the Detroit Lions came to terms with three more picks on Wednesday.

Roar Report has learned the team's later round picks, fifth-round tackle Jonathan Scott (Texas), sixth-round defensive back Dee McCann (West Virginia) and seventh-rounder Anthony Cannon (Tulane), will all report to training camp on time.

Although exact terms were not immediately available, Roar Report was told that the deals signed by both Scott and McCann will span three years. McCann's deal was the minimum salary, while both players received a signing bonus.

Scott is considered a project, but packages size (6'7, 315 lbs), strength and most importantly, versatility. He provides solid depth at the left tackle position, but can also be used at guard if needed.

McCann, meanwhile, is an athletic defensive back and considered a "system" cornerback. He will have to make his mark on special teams. McCann's agent, Andy Simms, said that the deal went down to the wire because the two sides only began negotiating late last week.

Cannon was Detroit's final selection in April, but could also become a productive special teams player if he is able to stand out during training camp.

A two-year, All Conference starter, Cannon (5'11, 220 lbs) possesses the high-motor and intensity that defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson and head coach Rod Marinelli love to see on the field.

"Anthony is ecstatic about coming to terms and being a part of the Lions organization and the progress that they intend to make this season," said Cannon's agent, James Williams.

"He's looking forward to coming into camp and being a contributing member."

With four members of its draft class now under contract, Detroit will turn its focus to its top three picks -- Ernie Sims, Daniel Bullocks and Brian Calhoun.

All players are due to report Thursday evening, with the first practice beginning Friday morning.

NOTE: The Lions also released tight end Val Barnaby earlier in the week.

Lions | Team signs Calhoun
Wed, 26 Jul 2006 22:15:00 -0700

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Detroit Lions have signed third-round draft pick RB Brian Calhoun to a four-year, $2.36 million contract, which included a $753,000 signing bonus. "I'm excited," Calhoun said Wednesday night, July 27. "I'm relieved it's done. I didn't want to be another rookie who missed valuable time. I really want to help the team and being on time is a good start."

Nothing new from the Lions's front office on waiting until the last minute to get the contracts done. We rarely have holdouts and have the rookies in camp on time often. Now let's get Sims and Bullocks done today Mellon
