LIONS SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHAT THEY WERE GETTING IN CULLEN

In its report regarding the recent arrests of Lions defensive line coach Joe "Lady Godiva" Cullen, the Detroit Free Press explains that the Lions didn't bother to call Mississippi Athletic Director Pete Boone for a reference, which likely would have alerted the Lions to Cullen's March 2005 arrest for public intoxication.

Though the Lions won't say whether they knew about Cullen's history, they clearly should have. Even without making a phone call to Pete Boone.

As it turns out, all the team needed to do was search the Internet, which would have revealed that Cullen was actually fired by Mississippi after his arrest -- and that he then sued the school for $434,000.

(Curiously, Cullen's online bio omits reference of any kind to his stint at Ole Miss. Ditto for the news release announcing his hiring.)

A basic search also would have revealed that Cullen was reprimanded in 2003 by the Indiana University for going Bob Knight on one of his players.

So the Lions knew and stupidly hired Cullen anyway, or they stupidly didn't know. Either way, it's an inexcusable outcome for a team that when hiring personnel in the future might want to invest in, say, a roulette wheel.

Thanks, Taco Bill, for finding those stories. You are now officially overqualified to run the Lions' security department.

Seems like alot of people are opening doors for this guy and he
keeps shutting them with his alcohol problems.

Rosie Palms and her 5 sisters. Just how drunk does this guy get? Driving naked drunk, that's how. That's worse than knee walking, pants ****ting, pukin' through the nose drunk. Come to think of it, maybe he was pants ****ting drunk and threw the clothes out the window so he didn't have to explain to the wife why he **** his pants again? I totally understand.

This is something you would see on "Reno 911".

Report: Lions suspend assistant Cullen after arrests

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Detroit Lions assistant coach Joe Cullen, who was arrested twice in the past two weeks, has reportedly been suspended for one game.

He will not coach this week against the Seahawks, The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News reported Friday.

Police in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn said Cullen, who coaches the team's defensive line, was pulled over Aug. 24 and ticketed on suspicion of indecent and obscene conduct.

The ticket does not provide any other information why Cullen allegedly was nude. The Lions said alcohol was involved.

Then, on Sept. 1, police stopped his 2006 Ford Explorer and determined he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.12 percent, court records show. The legal limit for drivers in Michigan in 0.08 percent.

Cullen, who lives in Dearborn, posted bond in both misdemeanor cases and was coaching at Wednesday's practice.

The 38-year-old, who was hired from the University of Illinois, issued a statement Wednesday to apologize.

"I would like to apologize to the Deroit Lions organization, our fans, my family and friends for any embarrassment these incidents have caused," he said. "These incidents represent a mistake in judgment on my part. I deeply regret them and have learned a valuable lesson. It won't happen again."

Lions president Matt Millen said in a statement that Cullen has requested treatment.

"We are obviously very disappointed," the statement said. "These are very serious matters that will be handled sternly and appropriately by our organization."

Cullen was scheduled to appear next week in 19th District Court for both cases.

Cullen was fired from the University of Mississippi in 2005 after an alcohol-related arrest at a restaurant.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
