Jones works out and expects to play
Quote:
Kevin Jones has taken another step toward playing in his first game of the season.

Jones gave his injured left foot a hard workout in practice Wednesday. If he doesn't have a setback today or Friday, Jones expects to play for the Lions in Sunday's game at Philadelphia.

Going on the road would be a special homecoming for Jones. He grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester and was a highly touted running back at Cardinal O'Hara High School before going to Virginia Tech.

Wednesday's practice was the most strenuous for Jones since being put on the active roster at the end of the exhibition season.

"I practiced hard," Jones said. "I tried to go all out, and it felt good. We're going to see -- towards the end of the week, see how it feels. I'm optimistic."

Coach Rod Marinelli used the same word -- "optimistic" -- after watching Jones in practice.

"He seemed not to have any problems," Marinelli said. "He was cutting pretty violently today and running pretty hard today. I'm optimistic. It's the day after where we find out. He can either get really sore and swollen, or there's nothing the next day."

Tatum Bell started the first two games at tailback. T.J. Duckett went out because of an ankle injury early in the first game, leaving Brian Calhoun as the backup.

Jones blossomed as a receiver last year, catching 61 passes, the most in his three pro seasons. His presence would add depth and receiving ability to the backfield.

"That does nothing but boost us on offense," quarterback Jon Kitna said of having Jones back. "It's not like you're adding a guy who hasn't been in it (the offense). He helps in the passing game and the running game.

"It adds a guy who's a pretty dynamic talent."
