You and a group of people have a draft of NFL players. There are different ways to play, as well as different amount of starting players in each league. Some have head to head games each week(my team plays your team) some (like my league) use total points in the end of the season to determine the champ. Each league has a scoring system...x amt of points for touchdowns, y amt of pts for yardage, etc. The players performance in the NFL games determines how many points your players get. That's basically it. Your best bet is to find a friend who is into it already and ask him to explain it in more detail. Maybe be a co-owner of a team next year to get your feet wet.

there is way too much to "break it down", do a search on yahoo or google for bulding a fantasy football league

Your best bet would be to join a free online league like at NFL.com or Yahoo.com. That's how I got started and now I love it (even though Drew Brees majorly let me down this season, lol). They explain all the rules and scoring systems on sign up, so it's a good way to learn.
