Ex-Packer Brown leaves door open to NFL return
By Tamira Surprenant
WEST ALLIS -- Gilbert Brown has not completely ruled out a return to professional football.
Brown, a nose tackle and 10-year veteran with the Green Bay Packers, was on the mend following left knee surgery when he was released by the Packers in March of 2004.
Arguably one of the most adored Packers players during the 1990s, Brown tore his right muscle biceps but still started in 14 of 16 games in 2003 and had 14 tackles.
The 35-year-old worked out with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2005, but no deal transpired. Brown still has aspirations to renew his career and has been keeping the lines of communications open with the Packers.
"I am talking to (Packers general manager) Ted Thompson, but I don't know what is going to come about," Brown said in a recent interview. "But a guy in my situation will probably have to wait until after the draft (April 29 and 30) before he starts getting calls. ... So I'm just in a holding pattern right now, just try to stay in shape and be ready when they do call me.
"I just want to get out there and play two or three more years and close the door on it. Hopefully, with me working out and doing what I need to do, it will get somebody to open their eyes."
Brown's weight fluctuated erratically during his NFL career - he was listed at 6-foot-2 and 340 pounds during his final season - but he is noticeably trimmer and said that he's lost some weight.
And whether or not he plays in the NFL again, he realizes staying in shape also is important to his future health.
"(My weight) has always been a question of nobody's business, so I will never tell that," said Brown. "Yeah, I've lost some weight and I feel pretty good. My goal is to lose a few more pounds.
"I would like to play football if I get an opportunity. This will be my last year trying so if it happens, it happens."
Brown made 103 starts in 125 games with the Packers, and competed in 15 playoff games. He recorded 292 tackles (186 solo) and had seven sacks in his career.
