Former Packer Chmura rips Favre, calls him 'selfish'
Former Packer Chmura rips Favre, calls him 'selfish'
Staff/news services
Former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl tight end Mark Chmura ripped Brett Favre - his former friend and teammate - during his Sunday morning radio show.
Commenting on Favre's inability to make a decision on whether to retire or return for one more season, Chmura said: "People who don't think that it's all about him are fooling themselves. With a quote like 'What are they gonna do, cut me?' It's all about him."
On Thursday, Favre dismissed the idea that the Packers had set an April 1 deadline for a decision on his future. Favre told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald: "If I don't tell them by Saturday, what will they do, cut me?"
Saturday had been the due date for a $3 million roster bonus for Favre. But Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Friday that the team again decided to push back the bonus date. It is the third time this offseason that the date for the roster bonus has been changed.
Chmura made his comments during the Miller Lite Football Show, which airs Sunday mornings from 8 to 10 a.m. on Milwaukee's ESPN Radio, WAUK-AM/1510.
Chmura continued: "Where it's hypocritical is, (Favre is) very critical of Javon Walker and, 'He's not a team player, you know (Walker) doesn't care about the team.'
"Well, what's (Favre) doing now? I mean, does he think this is the best thing possible for the team? I mean, they have one quarterback on the roster who they like ... they have to know."
Chmura added: "These quotes are, 'I am bigger than the team, I will make my decision when I want, and (Packers general manager) Ted Thompson and (coach) Mike McCarthy aren't gonna tell me what to do."
Chmura added that he isn't sure why Favre would want to return in 2006.
"Then (Favre) had the other quote in the newspaper saying if he comes back this is 'definitely his last year.' Well, the Packers aren't going to the Super Bowl. They aren't close to going to the Super Bowl. I think if they keep going in the direction they are they can go 8-8, 9-7. Why come back? Why, if it's not the money?"
Chmura last played for the Packers on Sept.19, 1999, when he sustained a career-threatening neck injury against Detroit. He missed the rest of the 1999 season, and in May 2000 was charged with rape after a 17-year-old girl told police he sexually assaulted her at a high school post-prom party.
The Packers released Chmura less than a month after he was charged. After a trial that drew national attention, Chmura was found not guilty in February 2001. He considered an NFL comeback but decided against it.
His comments Sunday make it appear as though Chmura still is bitter about the lack of support he got from Favre during his legal troubles.
"He's a selfish guy," Chmura said of Favre. "He's a very selfish guy. And what people don't know, I'm not going to say this to throw the guy under the bus, but this is a guy from my arrest to my acquittal never called me one time.
"It was disappointing, but you know you find out what people are made of, what they are all about. And I'll tell you what, the friends I have now, I wouldn't trade them for anything.
"You know I got more calls and letters from the old timers. Fuzzy Thurston. Jerry Kramer. Ron Kramer."

i agree with chmura, favre is only hurting his team by not saying anything, i bet he will end up waiting until the last second, and then leaving, screwing the packers over, big time.

he has always been pretty selfish in his career, so it would just fall in line.

Why is this news?
Nice of Chmura to say what we've all been thinking, but who cares? What does Chmura have to say about it now that he hasn't played in almost seven years? Yes, Favre is selfish. Yes, his attitude is hurting the team, but a guy who hasn't played a down in the better part of a decade (and wasn't that great when he did) needs to stay out of it.

I agree with you there Storm, I am not a fan of that and I was actually surprised Chmura would even comment on it, but you know how the retired get all giddy when the cmeras come back around...
