Many of you have questioned, all over this site, why I think the Packers will (not necessarily take the division, but at least) be able to beat the Vikings this year. I'm even finding it in the Colts forum, and that's bad. As someone who prides himself on backing up my predictions with fact-based statements, I'll now use this thread to explain why I personally feel we're a little better than Minnesota. Hopefully you all read this, and find something better to do than call me a homer in the Dallas and Indy threads.
Packers vs. Vikings 2006.
Neither team is anywhere near making a run in the playoffs. Hell, no one in this division is. Regardless, rivalries are a big part of this sport, and this is how this one breaks down from my point of view.
QB-Both teams have decided to go with veterans this year. Very old, experienced veterans. Both have rings, both have set records, but one is a legend in a way only two others in history have been, and the other can't compete with that.
Advantage-Pack
RB-Minnesota has done a great job of building a rushing attack this year. GB has the potential, but with five backs, four of whom were injured in 05, it's hard to tell who will be starting, and who will be practice squad or cut.
Advantage-Vikings
FB-Again, two very experienced veterans. Richardson is one of the best lead blockers in the league. Henderson can take credit for every yard in Green's career, but he's showing his age and there's no one behind him.
Advantage-Vikings
WR-Koren Robinson and who even knows who else, against Driver, Ferguson, and a rookie that people are already comparing to Boldin. Add to that the best passing arm in the league, and this is no contest.
Advantage-Pack
TE-Franks is good, but inconsistent with blocking. Vikings have no real solid, consisten threat at the position either.
Advantage-Push
OL-Too early to call, as both teams intend to start draft picks. Vikings added Hutchison and that will open up the running game, but the other side of the line is still suspect, and Brad is not known for his mobility under pressure.
At this point-Push
DT/DE-Vikings struggled with stopping the run last year. Packers were 7th in the NFL in total yards allowed, and KGB and Kampman are both back for more. We'll take this one thanks.
Advantage-Pack
LB-A position both teams struggled with last year, and both have tried to address this offseason. This one comes down to draft picks. I fully believe Greenway will develop into a top LB and a valuable playmaker. However, those are things that Hawk already is.
Advantage-Pack
DB-Sharper is still Sharper, and any team is lucky to have him. No one will deny that he's about the only player in that secondary who can make plays though. Smoot needs some work, and there's not much depth either. Woodson opposite Harris should be a lot of fun to watch, and those two combined are much more than Sharper is alone.
Advantage-Pack
K/P-I'm still mad, and I don't want to talk about it.
Advantage-Vikings
Special teams-Don't expect to see either team run kicks for TDs this year. This is a weak area for both. However, Packers without a doubt have more depth at WR, so unless the Vikes intend to have Taylor return kicks as well...
Advantage-Pack
Packers- 6
Vikings- 3
That's all there is to that one. If it's any consolation though...
