Language lessons not fun for Favre
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=443986
Virtually the same plays, but different terminology.
That sums up Brett Favre's first impression of the Green Bay Packers new offense being installed by head coach Mike McCarthy.
"I can't say it's been exciting," Favre said, referring to his experience learning McCarthy's system.
The Packers quarterback told the NFL Network on Tuesday that observers won't notice much difference between the new offense and the old offense. He said he has had to unlearn 15 seasons of references in order to make way for the new.
"The transition has gone OK," Favre said. "But it has been difficult. I mean, 15 years with the same offense. I think what makes it so difficult is, I think, when people watch us this upcoming year, for the most part, the plays will be recognizable. But the way we call them, the terminology, is totally different.

Am I the only one the thinks these are underhanded remarks? Is he trying to throw a dagger at someone? The new coach? Or management? I guess what I got from it was Favre is thinking nothing has changed, so what was the point in hiring the new coach? Same team, same offense, same result, different way to say it.

That's exactly what I've read as well, and I've been listening to Favre for long enough to know when he's throwing daggers. The fact is, McCarthy is the exact same style of coach as Sherman was, running the same traditional, Walsh-style WCO. That's the idea. So why didn't they keep Sherman? The problem is, Sherman only sees 50-60yds at a time. He's never looked past the next game, the here and now, to think what would happen when Holmgren's team wasn't there anymore, and he actually had to build a team himself. He was easily the worst GM we've ever had. Look at his tunnel-vision drafts, his propensity for spending tons of money on guys like Cletidus Hunt and not paying guys like Walker, and above all, his outright lack of planning for the future. Did he win? Yes, but he did it by using Holmgren's plays and Holmgren's players, and couldn't ever go beyond that. He's about to run the exact same plays in Houston this year too, just watch. If Favre can't understand the need for a fresh face, he's been on the Sherman bandwagon for too long. Give him time, and some pride in actually winning more than four games, and he should quit the comments.

Just an outsiders opinion, looking in through the window. The new era of packer football should have started March 3, 2006. All they did was take valuable playing time from Rogers, unless they have seen enough in practice to deem him a mistake. I can't imagine that would be the case, they didn't draft a highly rated QB for the future this year, so Rogers must be it. But when the hell is the future?????

I can somewhat answer that. Since part of Sherman not being able to plan ahead included not having a clue how to train a new QB that wasn't already groomed for him, and especially one who came from Tedford to begin with, and therefore needed soem extra practice, he initially called Rodgers a bust.
Favre comes back, for to satisfy his own ego, and to help make sure that Rodgers either gets the extra time he needs or the GM gets a high enough pick to replace him. Enter new coaching staff, knowing how to do more than just call plays, and saying "Rodgers ain't bad, he's just not Favre." Suddenly Rodgers is impressing everyone in OTAs to the point that Favre gets sent home early. When is the future? Let's let go of the present first. Not just Favre, but Green and Henderson as well. Give them one shot at redemption, and then begin the new era of losing.

Walker was a huge mistake. They could have had Rogers, Walker, and gado grow together.

gado did look good for a little over a half a a season, but he has to play more for me to be deemed a future star.

Agreed, but his attitude alone makes me love him. If every player were grateful to play as he is, we'd have no contract holdouts at all. Walker got hurt too much and often to keep on at #1 anyhow, his mouth was just the final nail. The new plan is to have Rodgers, Gado and Davenport in the backfield together, and newcomers Jennings and Boerighter. The Packers offense of the future. Now all we need is a TE that can block, and for the new line to gel. We could be back on top of that joke of a division sooner than I expected. Or we could suck...
