Default Former TCU player sentenced in firearms case

A former TCU football player who was drafted this year by the Green Bay Packers was sentenced to 15 months’ probation Monday for unlawfully carrying a firearm - a charge stemming from allegations that he fired two shots into the air outside a Stockyards bar in May.

Dacor “Cory” Rodgers, 23, reached an agreement with prosecutors Monday in which he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor gun-possession charge and received 15 months’ deferred adjudication probation. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine.

Deferred adjudication probation means that if Rodgers successfully completes his probation, the case will be dismissed and a conviction will not appear on his record.

Even with the questionable backgrounds many of these players have endured thorughout their lives, when is it supposed to sink in that something good has happened to them, and now it's time to reap the rewards of hard work?

It's not hard. I grew up a poor white kid, single mother. I'm only 34, had a daughter at 21. I was a wreckless soul. Once my daughter was born, the next day I started wearing my seatbelt. Something I had never ever done before. Sure I did other things that were probably endangering to my life, but the fact is it was a conscious change I made. Everyone thinks they're OK to drive after 1 or 2. The day after I got my commercial driver's lisence, I don't drive even after a half a beer. My lisence is my livelyhood. Conscious decisions that's what they are. There is no excuse why these athletes can't make them. Mant of them do, and good for them. But the ones that continue to display their stupidity, I can not feel sorry for. The people i feel sorry for are the ones who suffer due to these athlete's poor decisions.

well, I agree with you. one thing you have to take into account is that there is a precedent set for these kids, they see guys that do bad things and get away with them, so it somehow rationalizes to them thier actions, that or they just don't care.

Default C. Rodgers put on probation

Full Article:
http://www.packersnews.com/archives/...26719817.shtml
Excerpt:

Jeff Kearney, Rodgers’ attorney, said Rodgers was not involved in the fight and fired his gun into the air to scare off a group of men who had surrounded him.

“I think our investigation and the D.A.’s investigation both indicated that, when he discharged the firearm, he didn’t fire at or in the direction of anyone,” Kearney said.

“He simply fired into the air to end a situation that was somewhat tense and to disperse the crowd — and it worked.”

If Rodgers successfully completes his deferred adjudication probation, his case will be dismissed and a conviction won’t appear on his record.

We certainly hear enough about athletes, and particularly rookies, being morons and getting into trouble. This doesn't sound like anything that bad to me. With no previous record, and a deferred sentence, I think this guy should be just fine. Now he can concentrate on his new job, replacing Murphy at KR.
