Thompson, who in 1½ years on the job has remade the Packers by extensively turning over the roster and coaching staff, revealed that in the weeks leading up to the draft, he told coach Mike McCarthy and top executives Bob Harlan and John Jones he probably wouldn't trade down from the No. 5 overall pick.
He kept his word, determining that Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk was a cornerstone player for a team whose top talent had eroded.
"If we get the kind of player we want to get, we're going to take him," Thompson said he told McCarthy, Harlan and Jones, "and this is the player I felt very, very strongly about in terms of adding him to the Green Bay Packer tradition and the legends here. He's still young, but he's played a lot of football in a big-time place, and I think you're going to like him quite a bit as we go forward."
