Pack Announces New Coach
http://www.packers.com/news/releases.../2/index.phtml
It seemed to me that Jim Bates would have been a lot better choice than the 49ers offensive coordinator, but like so many other decisions they've made, Green Bay forgot to ask me...

Interesting selection...Looks like he was with the team as QB coach in 99, so they know what they are getting. I am supprised they didn't go with somebody else, but who knows.
"McCarthy experienced that uniqueness as the Packers' quarterbacks coach in 1999. Five players who finished 2005 on Green Bay's roster played for the Packers in '99, including Donald Driver and McCarthy's primary pupil that year, Brett Favre. Led by Favre's 4,091 yards - his third-highest career total - Green Bay ranked seventh in passing and ninth overall offensively."

Umm...has Brett Favre really ever had a QB coach? I mean, he breaks all the rules, yet still makes big plays. His coaches pretty much just sit back and let him play. Kinda like a WR coach with TO...
I'm not sure bein Favre's QB coach would qualify you for much of anything.

Well, since being the QB coach during Favre's worst passing season (lots of yards, sure, but almost as many INTs as TDs), he also has been an OC for the Saints and 49ers, two teams with offenses that suck. The article also mentions he worked closely with #1 draft pick Alex Smith, who has largely been a disappointment this year. I am personally very angered by the hiring of this guy. He doesn't have much of a resume at all, and he's younger than Gruden, so he can't have too much experience. Last I heard, it was between Jim Bates and Ron Rivera, both of whom would have been solid choices. Hell, they could have just kept Sherman rather than getting someone that's never coached on a good team. Green Bay's tradition is in finding talent where no where else expects to find it, and I may end up being surprised once again here. McCarthy may end up being the best coach in Green Bay since Lombardi, but until I see it, I will continue to shout the following refrain: (What) were they thinking?!! Almost anyone would have been better!!! Are they TRYING to run my team into the ground?!!!!
Phew. I feel lots better now...

True, but it wasn't the only thing on Reid's resume.

Actually, they may well be trying to run the team into the ground. They may be lookin to sell. Many times a successful sports franchise is valued too high to sell, so the owners will run em into the ground for a few years and get out.
As for Alex Smith, don't judge him too harshly. Virtually any rookie QB starting in the same year he was drafted will look like s***. Hell, look at Eli Manning. Give the kid some time, he may surprise ya.

If i'm mot wrong and I can not remeber the last time I was wrong, I do hit my head alot, the Packers our owned by the people of Green Bay. A strange situation I have not heard of another team setup like that but what ever works. The football people have to report to the towns people at lest once a year in a sort of town hall like meeting.

He's right. They can't sell the Packers, because they have no specific owner. They're the property of the city. Back in the day, there were a few teams like that, but we're the only one left now. So that theory's out. I think we'll just go with Green Bay likes to find talent in obscure places, and this guy apparently said something that really impressed the management. We'll see next year at any rate. I'm not optimistic at all though.
