Barring surprises, Thompson likely to trade down
Cornerback Cason may intrigue GM if he's available at No. 30
By Pete Dougherty • pdougher@greenbaypressgazette.com • April 26, 2008

Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason could intrigue Packers General Manager Ted Thompson if he's available when the Packers pick at No. 30 overall. The Packers like his size, instincts and intelligence. Special to Gannett Wisconsin Media

Ted Thompson has to be hoping one of the top five tackles or Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart somehow is on the board when the Green Bay Packers' pick at No. 30 overall comes up in today's NFL draft. However, that was looking highly unlikely on the draft's eve.

Unless something unexpected happens, that could leave Thompson strongly inclined to trade back a few spots — most likely with a quarterback-needy team if Louisville's Brian Brohm or Delaware's Joe Flacco is available — rather than rely on his draft board to take the next-best player.

If things fall as expected, there might be a couple of players at No. 30 Thompson would consider selecting, most notably Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason, but also Miami safety Kenny Phillips, and tight ends John Carlson of Notre Dame, Fred Davis of USC and Dustin Keller of Purdue. But trading back into the early second round could offer similar value, because some of those players could be available, along with players at other positions, including running back, of comparable value.

"There could be any of eight different guys there (at No. 30 that Thompson) likes, but he also knows (they) might not be there at all," said a high-ranking scout for another team picking in the bottom quarter of the first round.

The big thing to keep eye on today if you're a Packers' fan (guessing you are) are the Atlanta Falcons at No. 3, the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 5, the New York Jets at No. 6 and the Baltimore Ravens at No. 8. Whoever doesn't get quarterbacks Matt Ryan and possibly Chad Henne, those teams will be potential trade partners with the Packers.

One less trading partner for Packers
By Greg A. Bedard
Saturday, Apr 26 2008, 02:23 PM

Green Bay - After Jake Long and Chris Long went 1-2, the Falcons' selection of Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan at No. 3 means the Packers will have one less trading partner should they want to trade out of the first round.

That leaves the Jets, Chiefs and Ravens as the prime candidates to want to deal back in the first round for either Chad Henne, Brian Brohm or Joe Flacco. Baltimore could get desperate and take Henne at No. 8. That would be bad for the Packers.

Baltimore-Jax trade bad news for Packers
By Greg A. Bedard
Saturday, Apr 26 2008, 02:59 PM

Green Bay - With their targeted QB off the board (Matt Ryan), the Baltimore Ravens have traded back to the 26th pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That means another potential trading partner is off the board.

Four spots ahead of the Packers, the Ravens will likely take Chad Henne or Brian Brohm.

Meh I dont think it's bad news!

Will Brohm and/or Henne even make it to the Packers?
By Greg A. Bedard
Saturday, Apr 26 2008, 04:09 PM

Green Bay - With the well-traveled Ravens trading up (after trading down) to select Delaware QB Joe Flacco, only Louisville's Brian Brohm and Michigan's Chad Henne remain among the second tier QB.

The Packers were hoping that Flacco, Brohm and Henne would be at 30 and they could raffle the pick off to the highest bidder. Now one or neither of the remaining two, Brohm and Henne, may be there.

Henne will go, I think, before the Packers pick. Brohm may drop all the way into the second round, which is where I think a system QB who isn't that tough should go.

CB Talib goes to Tampa
By Greg A. Bedard
Saturday, Apr 26 2008, 04:27 PM

Green Bay - After Leodis McKelvin and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the Packers had some interest in the next tier of cornerbacks.

Aquib Talib, who had some problems with marijuana in college, was in that group but he just went to Tampa Bay. Mike Jenkins of South Florida is still on the board. Most thought he would be gone by now.

Others in the CB group left:

Brandon Flowers
Tracy Porter
Antoine Cason
Patrick Lee
Justin King

The Dallas Cowboys, also hoping for a CB, have to be salivating. They'll likely get a RB (Mendenhall) and a CB before the Packers pick. Unless Ted Thompson somehow trades up.
