Texans sign LB Cowart, C Flanagan

March 24, 2006
HOUSTON (TICKER) -- The Houston Texans added a pair of former Pro Bowlers, signing linebacker Sam Cowart and center Mike Flanagan on Friday.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Cowart, 31, led the Minnesota Vikings with 104 tackles along with two sacks and two passes defensed in 15 games last season.

A second-round pick in 1998, Cowart went to the Pro Bowl with the Buffalo Bills in 2000, when he recorded 181 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks. He signed with the New York Jets in 2002 and spent three years there before being acquired by the Vikings last season.

Flanagan, 32, started 14 games for the Green Bay Packers this past season.

A third-round pick in 1996, Flanagan spent his entire career with the Packers. From 1999-2004, he put together a streak of 87 consecutive games, including playoffs, before being sidelined by an injury. Flanagan was named to the Pro Bowl in 2003.

The Texans on Friday also re-signed linebacker Troy Evans, who had 26 tackles and an interception last season.

It's a good start, but I had bigger names and other FA's in mind when I said that, but it is a good start.

they both may be a little old, but the texans need all the help they can get and getting 2 former pro bowlers cannot hurt thier situation

They need the veterans too and these two should help younger guys if nothing else.

Cowert is old, but he is still a very good player and Flanagan should be a very good center for them.

Any improvement to the O-line is a welcome thing, despite the age of the player. Good signing IMO.

Sure both the players are older, but the Texans really needed their leadership on the field.
