Default Kubiak excited about New QB Schaub

NFL NOTEBOOK: Kubiak ponders how Schaub might fit in | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

excerpt:

At the NFL meetings in Phoenix last week, Texans coach Gary Kubiak provided some insight into his philosophy, which should bode well for him in his continuing development as a head coach.

Kubiak was asked if he would force new quarterback Matt Schaub to adjust to what the Texans do, or would he adjust what the Texans do to fit Schaub's strengths.

"He has some strengths we have to adapt to," Kubiak said. "Our offense is built on a lot of movement, and we're still going to do that because we think he can do it, but if I listed his strengths, running isn't No. 1.

"His pocket presence, his ability to get rid of the ball, his savvy and his smarts would be at the top. There's going to be a little adjustment on our part, but that's part of coaching."

The Texans begin their offseason program on Monday. It's not mandatory, but they expect full participation. For fans and media, there's nothing like a new starting quarterback to generate excitement.

"I'm excited, too, just like the fans," Kubiak said. "It brings a lot of new energy to everybody in the building, and I'm part of that.

"I'm ready to get back to work and deal with Matt on a daily basis and teach him our system."

Since the Texans became interested in trading for Schaub, Kubiak has spent a lot of time talking with his new quarterback.

"Matt brings confidence and leadership," Kubiak said. "He's got an air about him, like, 'I'm ready to lead a team. I want to be one of the top quarterbacks in the league.'

"If you spend time with him, you see that he feels there's no doubt that he belongs here and deserves the opportunity he's been given. He's confident he can lead our team in the right direction. He's already doing a great job with our players and our organization, and I'm looking forward to getting started with him."

Seriously, he should just find Dave Carr and kick him in the stomach, how much more gushing could he do about Matt Schaub, who honestly, has barely played in the NFL. It cracks me up how much he obviously couldn't stand Carr, LMAO!!!!

Did the Texans move draft spots in order to get Schaub?

This article says alot about how much Carr did in fact suck and was uncoachable, I saw this in another place.

Kubiak convinced Carr's technique fails under stress | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

excerpt:

Soon after Kubiak was hired, he started talking with Carr about how important his feet are. Carr has worked on his moves for months, but Kubiak said he sees the same mistakes each week.

He and offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun plan to work more closely with Carr on his footwork. On one play in the second half on Sunday, Carr tripped as he pulled back from the center and was sacked.

"Mike (Flanagan) just kind of stepped on me," Carr said. "I've got to get out of there faster, too. But it was just a case where he's been trying to hold up on those guys inside, and eventually they're going to get a little push. We just had a quick three-step drop out there, and so I wasn't too deep, and he just caught my shoelace."

On other plays, Kubiak has identified what he says is a recurring problem.

"When he makes mistakes or things happen bad for him, it's usually tied to his feet," Kubiak said. "We have to get those things to where they're automatic for him."

Kubiak, a former QB who worked with a number of quarterbacks during his 11 years as an NFL assistant, understands the rewards Carr will reap when he becomes comfortable with what is being asked of him.

"I teach a quarterback to read with his feet," Kubiak said. "You take a three-step drop, you hit your ball foot, the ball goes here; if he's not open, you hitch, the ball goes here. That's the way you teach a guy to read. It is different for (Carr), what I'm teaching, so it's difficult for him."

Kubiak sees Carr's footwork break down mostly late in games and on key plays.

"Some of the things that happen to him (area) as the game goes on — they were in the third quarter, and the game's progressing and the bullets are flying, so to speak — we'll have a play-action or something, and his feet will get off or get incorrect, and it causes us to miss a play or something," Kubiak said. "It's something that you have to bring to the table every week for your football team. And he and I are going to battle until we get those things automatic, which they should be."
