Default Houston Texans news 10/23

An uplifting win for the Texans

The red jerseys the Texans wore against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday must have felt like capes.

How else can you explain their amazing transformation from stupormen to supermen?

The Texans' stunning 27-7 victory over the Jaguars was decisive and thorough on both sides of the ball, and it came when the team had been playing as if the players were loaded down with Kryptonite.

Default After an impressive win over the Jaguars, it's time to bring on the Titans

Before I get into what happened before, during and after the Texans' 27-7 victory over the Jaguars, I want to ask you to please check out the video I did after the game. It's my first one for our web site. Just don't forget that the camera adds 70 pounds.

Now, who would have thunk it? Certainly not me. I thought there was no way the Texans were going to defeat the Jaguars. I thought maybe they'd beat the spread, even though I didn't predict it.

Before we get serious here, I want to say something right now: I don't want to hear anything from anyone this week about what a bust Mario Williams is. For the second game in a row, he improved. Forget the sack. Byron Leftwich slipped, and Mario tapped him, but do you know what? There were 10 others who could have tapped him, too, but he beat them to it.

Default Hail to the victors! Hail to the Texans!

Here's to a turning point. Here's to the victory that points the Texans in a new direction. Did they look like a bona fide NFL franchise? Yes, they did. They defeated Jacksonville 27-7 by doing the things winning teams do. People like me have been so critical of the Texans, so critical of the Mario Williams pick and of David Carr that it's time to give them their due. For this one day — and hopefully many more — they look like they know what they're doing. If they do, if they put something together, they will win this city.

On Sunday, the Texans:

• Scored the final 17 points of the game.

Default Texans' Sherman uses motivational tactics to inspire players

Now we know one reason Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman led Green Bay to the playoffs four times in his six seasons as their head coach.

Sherman knows how to use motivational tactics to inspire his players.

Default Learning to run brings back the fun

They say football's a game of inches. And the Texans' running game has indeed been defined by inches — a few inches here and a few inches there.

On Sunday, the Texans ran the ball well enough to start talking about yards — a chunk here and a chunk there.

Default The recipe for a happy outcome: patience, sticking to the game plan

There is often a fine line between making plays and taking chances. For the most part, Texans coach Gary Kubiak wants his quarterback to stay away from that line.

Make plays when they are there; live to fight another play when the situation is tight.

Default Mario, DeMeco bring defense oh-so-tough look

MARIO Williams took a flying leap, headlong through the air, stretching his arms out in front of him like a kid making believe he was Superman.

The Man Of Steal.
