because we had the worst defense in the league the previous season.. we had an old and uneffective defensive line.. we had a new coach with a history of making no name backs into superstars.. we had the chance of Domanick Davis returning.. we had David Carr under a new contract.. we had an offensive system in place that needs a "one cut and go" back with good vision, power, and effectiveness between the tackles.. we also had no pass rush..and hadnt had a pass rush since our first season.
all of these things add together to make Mario Williams a logical choice.

The best point I ever heard about the Mario pick was by the Texans owner... he said the in a division with the Colts featuring the Manning, Harrison, Wayne attack you need to have a defense that can keep you in games.
it's way too easy to sit here now one year later and say they should have taken VY. at the time a lot of people didn't even have him taken as the first QB. The choice was Bush or Williams. Will Bush ever be an every down back carrying the ball 20+ times a game (and still stay healthy)? Who knows? IMO if Williams develops into a DE that will put up 10+ sacks yearly it won't matter cause that's harder to find then an elite RB.... Kubiak is also running the same system as the Broncos and we all know that the running game will be ok even with average backs.... Williams can't be called a bust yet...
also vince young cant be called a superstar yet..he is far from being an elite QB and the reason most think he is amazing is because espn said so and he made the madden cover.. in reality he is a qb who did good as a rookie and made some plays but did nothing amazing.

Or an offense that will keep up with them...

I think it would take far too long to get a once in a decade QB, two Hall of Fame WRs, an incredible (while under-rated) offensive line, and a 1500 yard rusher on a team.
