One week from today, coach Gary Kubiak and general manager Rick Smith lead the Texans' contingent to Indianapolis for the scouting combine.
The six-day event is the next and most important step in the scouting process. Pro days and private workouts come after the combine as the NFL draws closer to the draft on April 26-27.
"I'm so much more comfortable with what we're doing," Kubiak said Tuesday after attending the funeral of former Oilers linebacker John Grimsley, who accidentally shot himself last week while cleaning his guns at home. "When I got hired two years ago, I didn't know anything about the draft until I got to Indianapolis.
"I'm not saying I know everything about the draft right now, but I know a whole lot more now than I did then."
This is Kubiak's third draft as the Texans' coach. It is the second year in which Smith has overseen the draft. Naturally, they are more confident because they've been through a draft together, and early returns show they look as if they know what they're doing.
