As fans in Indianapolis still bask in the glow of their first trip to the Super Bowl, it is easy to forget how different things might have turned out, but for a critical decision back in April of 1998.
Peyton Manning entered his senior season at Tennessee as the consensus top pick for the upcoming NFL draft. Manning did little to disappoint, throwing for 3,819 yards and 37 touchdowns, compared to 11 interceptions. What nobody counted on was the emergence of Washington State junior quarterback Ryan Leaf.
Leaf passed for 3,968 yards and 34 touchdowns, compared to 11 interceptions, leading to the Cougars to their first trip to the Rose Bowl in 67 years. Not surprisingly, he decided to forego his senior year and turn professional, sparking feverish debate about whether Manning or Leaf should be selected first.
