Colts excel in long drives
Manning and Indy's offense manage to put together difficult 90-yard drives 3 times in the past 2 games
By Phil Richards
There are so many things that can go wrong in the course of a 90-yard drive that the Indianapolis Colts have scored on only five of them through 15 games this season.
Three came in a five-possession sequence spanning the past two games. All were significant, and quarterback Peyton Manning's contributions approach astonishing: 19-of-19 for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
That's 7-for-7 for 68 yards and a touchdown on the 91-yard fourth-quarter drive that beat Oakland 21-14 on Dec. 16.
That's 6-for-6 for 68 yards on the first 92-yard touchdown drive Sunday against Houston.
That's another 6-for-6 for 68 yards and the touchdown that concluded a second consecutive 92-yarder that made it 17-7 and stirred the breezes in a 38-15 blowout.
The Texans knew they had seen something special.
"Peyton Manning was who Peyton Manning is. He was great," Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels said after the game.
"He's like having an offensive coordinator out there," Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson said. "When we were in one thing, he went to another. When we were in this, he went to that. You can't knock a future hall of famer."
