I had heard they wanted to get a vet in there @ safety. I didn't even know Knight was available... I doubt he's as good as he used to be, but atleast he's a veteran player.

Depth is a very beautiful thing. This probably spells the end of Nick Sorensen though.

Jaguars sign Knight
For depth at safety

By Vic Ketchman, jaguars.com senior editor
08/13/07

The Jaguars have signed veteran Sammy Knight for the purpose of adding depth to the safety position.

“Smart, tough, veteran safety; he’ll get a chance to compete for a backup role,” head coach Jack Del Rio said of Knight, one of three veteran safeties the Jaguars worked out on Monday morning. Robert Griffith and Shaun Williams are the other two.

Knight, 6-0, 205, would be in his 11th NFL season this year. He played in 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last year and intercepted one pass. Knight played in New Orleans when Del Rio was a young assistant with the Saints. Knight played collegiately at USC, which is also Del Rio’s alma mater.

The move comes as no surprise. The Jaguars are making a bold move into the future at safety this year, as third-year man Gerald Sensabaugh and rookie Reggie Nelson take over for the departed Deon Grant and Donovin Darius. The real issue at the position, however, is depth. The Jaguars wanted to add experience to their depth at the position.

The Jaguars have released safety Kevin McCadam, returning the team’s roster to 87 players. McCadam was signed as a free agent on March 26.[/b]
Also the end for Kevin McCadam.

It's funny that you say that...that was my reaction initially. I also thought he had been in the league longer than 11 years.

But oh well. He could be a great tutor for young guys like Sensabaugh and Nelson.

I was expecting McAdam was brought in to make a difference on the Special Teams coverage units, which were awful last year. It's kind of dissapointing that he isn't even going to make the cut. It makes me wonder if the Jaguars are making proper committment to Special Teams. It's hard to tell of course because Special Teams can vary wildy and unpredictably year from year. So we'll have to wait and see.
